21 Ghost forest

One of the things I realized when I was back home in Australia is how much of an outdoors girl I am. My favourite things to do are horseriding, rock-climbing, beach walking and bike riding... all followed by brunch a good skinny latte somewhere of course.

Turns out I can indulge my love for the outdoors just a short train ride away from NYC (90 minutes to be exact!). Last weekend we went hiking through the Franny Reese State Park out near Poughkeepsie. The trees were bare, an icy wind was blowing and a weak sun peeked out sporadically from behind the clouds. It was somewhat eerie walking through a forest with no leaves (for an Aussie girl!) but beautiful, despite the fact I was on bear alert the whole way...

... I should have been more wary of a cute little dog called Sammy, who raced up to us growling fiercely and then bit my hiking pants. Hmmm. Guess it was better than seeing a bear (or a snake if we were in Australia!).

From New York, with love xox

I love taking little excursions from the city. It's nice to get out to the great outdoors from time to time. :)

Its so great that you found an outdoorsy place to escape the city. The pictures remind me of something I'd read in a novel...a thriller most probably. There is beauty in all different types of natural habitats. Gosh - bear alert! That sounds quite scary! I guess you could say the same here about our game reserves when people should be on cheetah or lion watch! And Australia has all the most dangerous snakes in the world all on one continent, right?

I'm not much of a hiker but this park looks like a wonderful little outdoor escape from the city. Glad to hear you didn't run into any bears :)

What a brilliant weekend! Oh I nearly stepped on a snake as a kid growing up in the country in Australia and I agree I would much prefer a growling dog any day! x

How lovely that you've found a spot where you can let your outdoors spirit free! Something that really got me when I moved to Australia was how very different the landscape and the colors were to any other place I'd been. I appreciate it all a lot more now!
